When western explorers hit the Rocky mountains in search of gold, it was clear that getting around, especially in winter would be difficult. Settlers soon found that webbed snowshoes were virtually useless in the Colorado snow and with a lack of roads and railroads, most had to use skis to get around during the winter months.

Some made their own skis at home from pine or spruce trees 12 feet long, 4 inches wide and half an inch thick. The ends were placed in boiling water, then strapped to a frame and placed in front of the fire until they were dry. Everyone in the family had a pair of skis, down to some of the youngest members. The bindings consisted of a toe cap and lashings, and a five foot long pole served as a brake and steering rod, though the user usually had to come to a complete stop before making any turns.
Norwegian snowshoes took Coloradans into the deepest valleys and up the highest peaks in search of gold, fun, companionship, and solitude. In a time where there were few roads, it did not matter because they could go anywhere.
This resiliency and daringness often put them in danger with deaths in the snow frequently occurring from avalanches, exposure, exhaustion, wild animals, falling off the trail, or any other number of reasons. Some went out into the snow and were never seen again.
As time went on, they started using black clothing, painting their faces black, and wearing silk undergarments to keep themselves warm.
